Days 11 - 15

Day 11 - June 3, 2011 - Sonora, TX

Again got the early start I wanted. Rolled out at 6:30 AM CDT and arrived at the motel at 4:30 PM CDT. Would have been a bit sooner but I listened to Martha (my GPS) and took a scenic detour to avoid San Antonio. Won’t do that again. Enjoying the ride through the Texas Hill Country. Reminds me a lot of New Mexico, which I miss. Forgot to mention yesterday that as I was rounding a bend, going into Lake Charles, LA, off in the distance I saw this bridge and uttered a few expletives. From my point of view the incline looked awesome but riding up it wasn’t that bad. Just tried not to look down. :-)

447 miles today.

Day 12 - June 4, 2011 - Deming, NM

The eyes of Texas are no longer upon me. Rolled into Deming, NM about 4:00 PM MDT after a 6:00 AM CDT start. Central West Texas is really very pretty. I could live there if I had to. West Texas not so much. Another hot day with frequent afternoon stops. The hydration vest is working well in the drier climate. Nothing much going on, no pictures.

521 miles today.

Day 13 - June 5, 2011 - Yuma, AZ

On the road at 5:45 AM MDT and off at 3:00 PM MST. Added a sunrise picture to the gallery. Very tempting to stay on I-10 this morning and spend the night at home. But that would just confuse the cat even more so onto Yuma for the night. Big town. I was thinking it would be the size of Tombstone but nope; it’s pretty big. Also tempted to go on to the San Diego area as it is only 180 miles down the road. But that road to too hot right now so I’ll stick to the plan. Should be nice and cool in the morning.

464 miles today.

Day 14 - June 6, 2011 - Castaic, CA

On the road at 5:30 AM MDT and off at 6:45 PM PDT.  Very long day, very high winds. I’ll fill out this day’s log tomorrow. Going to bed now. PS - Photos have been update. G’night.

Edited on 6/7/2011

The winds were very strong and gusty as I pulled into McDonald’s for breakfast. The driveway was a torn up disaster. Stopped to take a good look to determine how to proceed when a strong gust of wind blew me to my right. Didn’t quite have both feet down yet. My body went to the right and the bike went with it. We met again while laying on the driveway. After breakfast the winds seem to be calming down so off I went. About 10 miles up the road a sign informed me that “Very strong winds possible”. Well, inside of 10 minutes I struggled to get the bike onto the shoulder. Managed to keep it upright and proceeded to sit on it, holding on for dear life, for the next hour. The winds did calm down and I went back on the road. I did chuckle when I saw another sigh that said “Strong winds possible” and could readily appreciate the “downgrade” from “very” to just plain old “possible.” Then the southern portion of the LA metro area swallowed me up and spit me out, amazingly still alive, at the northern end. Do not ever want to do that again! By far the worst day of the trip.

Day 15 - June 7, 2011 - Willows, CA

On the road at 7:30 AM PDT and off at 6:00 PM PDT.  Beautiful day for a ride with the exception of about 20 miles of fog this morning. Took a leisurely pace which accounts for the longer time on the road. Most of the morning was spent in an anticlimactic state of mind due to yesterday. It just felt like the trip was over from the time I got up in the morning until after lunch. But my fog lifted, just like the morning fog did, and the trek continues on in better sprits. PS - Yesterday’s log was updated.

440 miles today.
