Days 6 -10

Day 6 - May 29, 2011 - West Palm Beach, FL

Good day today. A little on the long side but okay. Leave early tomorrow morning to get to Key West then turn around and head for upstate Florida pointed towards San Ysidro, CA. No rain today!!!

Day 7 - May 30, 2011 - Key West, FL

2 down, 2 to go! Very hot and humid ride down to Key West this morning. The Post Office was a little hard to find. It is set back from the road and the parked cars on the street blocked out the sign. Once I found it I had to drive onto the sidewalk to take the picture. Due to the heavy outbound traffic, indicating the end of the holiday weekend, I decided that rather then doing stop and go riding for 100+ miles back to the mainland I would just stay overnight and get an early start tomorrow. Hopefully more pictures tomorrow morning.

Day 8 - May 31, 2011 - Kissimmeet, FL

Got the early start I wanted. There is a picture in the photo gallery that shows the southernmost point in the continental US taken about 6:30 this morning. I should have stayed in bed! The ride up was great, no traffic. Got about 275 miles north and the telltale wobble of a flat tire (rear) knocked on my door. Waited for the AAA tow truck and then got towed to a nonexistent Harley dealership in Kissimmee. It had moved 5 miles down the road we found out. Dropped off the bike and went to the motel across the street. Bike should be ready in the morning.  I’m going to Disney world! Just kidding about the mouse thingy although I think I will go in the hot tub for 10 minutes or so.

Day 9 - June 1, 2011 - Pensacola, FL

The bike was ready around 10 AM EDT. Got into Pensacola around 6 PM CDT. Did you know the western part of the Florida panhandle is in the Central time zone? I didn’t. Never would have guessed it. NAS Pensacola is home to the Blue Angels which explains the interesting I-10 overpass decoration pictured below. Very hot and humid day. The hydration vest got a good workout, worth every penny of the $40 I paid for it. Especially going through the blast furnace commonly known as Tallahassee, FL. I was just looking at the projected temps for tomorrow. I think I lost 2 pounds while doing so! I’m thinking very early start and finish tomorrow.

Day 10 - June 2, 2011 - Beaumont, TX

Not the early start that I had wanted. Oh well. The spirit was less then willing but the flesh was weaker still. Kick stand up at 8:30 AM CDT and down at 7:00 PM CDT. Very hot and humid today. The hydration vest kinda sorta fails in this high humidity like a swamp cooler fails under the same conditions. Made many stops in the afternoon seeking air conditioning at rest areas and gas stations. The highlight of the day was being welcomed into Mississippi by Elvis (see photo gallery). Some people thought that he was kind of still but I found him to be most cordial. We had a most pleasant conversation. Did I mention it was very hot today? Second highlight was a great Mexican restaurant right next to my motel tonight. Tomorrow starts 880 miles of Texas. I sense that I may be yearning for Nebraska very soon.
